A house party for me now means more than two people over and me going to the store to get wine. In an exclusive chat with E! News, Tegan and Sara and the team behind High School explain why they were motivated to tell a very particular story in the new series about the duo’s early lives.
Tegan: New Kids on the Block was huge for us. Tegan and Sara Quin speak with CBC News about the TV adaptation of their memoir, High School — which recounts the twin sisters' lives as queer teens in s Calgary. Then I branched into punk, grunge, rock and indie rock. In this exclusive excerpt from the book, Sara recalls the first time she explicitly confessed to someone els—-and, more importantly, herself—that she was gay. Tegan: No. So when we sat down to make this record with Greg Kurstin, we talked about our fears.
I never could have told her that I felt something for her, that I had a crush, so whenever I hear any songs off of Post I immediately go there. We had all the records, sleeping bags and posters. We were very confusing. The recipient of this admission was a friend, Zoe, an aspiring dancer, whose name looped in Sara's mind "like a song.".
Now, our Chris Azzopardi sat down with the sister act for this one-on-one … or, one-on-two. Sara: We were reimagining our teen years when we were putting this video together. In middle school and high school, we loved house parties. They both. Tegan: I remember discovering Ani DiFranco and really embracing the side of me that liked girls.
Then came dance music — as much as we were total punkers and really into hardcore music, we were really into dance music, too. "I mean, we joked at the beginning when we got the green light for the show that we were just hoping we could find twins at all," Tegan says, adding: "We really hoped that the twins would be.
You wrote great songs. Pop duo Tegan and Sara talk about the queer '90s movies and musicians that inspired their journey, and the gay TV shows they currently love. High school was a tumultuous time for Canadian identical twins Tegan and Sara Quin. What songs remind you of your first?
Sara: My first choice as a child was New Kids on the Block. If anything, I loved having boyfriends because I could talk about how much I liked girls with them all the time. We revisited that defining era in music — and even before then, when the girls were hanging New Kids on the Block posters in their bedroom — during our interview with the Quin sisters.
I think our parents were slightly horrified because we grew up with U2 and Bruce Springsteen, so we were much more blue-collar than that. Tegan: My first kiss was with a boy. Everything you could possibly have. We were fairly disgusting and doing things that I would be embarrassed to have on camera.
Identical twins Sara (left) and Tegan Quin began making music together as teenagers. It was very empowering. What was the first pop album you owned? Around that same time, I remember really getting excited about Michael Jackson, because he was on the radio all the time.
